Character Arc Analysis

Vivi Ornitier, Final Fantasy IX

I have always been very impressed with the character Vivi from Final Fantasy IX. Considering that some of the more realistic protagonists of modern games fail to endear themselves to their users it is unique to say that an abundantly used character type (the Black Mage) familiar to the Final Fantasy faithful could catch such attention so effectively and genuinely create an emotional connection with a great many players; despite the fact that poor Vivi doesn't even have a face no less!

Vivi Ornitier is a Black Mage who is introduced early in the game trying to sneak his way into the acclaimed play "I Want to be Your Canary". Vivi is only "nine years old" but is extremely intelligent considering that fact. However, like most hyper-intelligent nine year olds, he is extremely introverted and as a result of his strangely perceived mannerisms he feels alienated from society. Black Mages are used as lifeless and emotionless soldiers in the universe of Final Fantasy IX and are literally created in an assembly line. When Vivi comes to terms with this he questions everything about himself, but ultimately, with the aid of the support of his friends, decides to search for the truth about his origins.

I find this to be a very dramatic scenario that intrigues me to no end. Even trying to imagine considering the possibility of being artificially engineered and learning about it after living is hard enough, let alone learning that for whatever reason you might be the only one that is different. Why am I different than the others? How long will I remain conscious of my existence? Am I the only Black Mage like me? Vivi had to deal with all of these questions and more but remained focus in helping his friends until the very end.
